Fracking In Illinois

We met a group speaking out against fracking in Illinois at the Green Festival this past weekend. There is much that can be done to stop or limit this activity. JCAR, the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, (12 IL Representatives and Senators), is able to block the fracking industry for up to 180 days by prohibiting the rules for fracking at their next meeting this Thursday, Nov. 6th. This would cause the rules to go back to the IL Dept. of Natural Resources for further work.

1) Please attend the next JCAR meeting this Thursday, Nov 6th at the Michael A Bilandic Building, 160 North LaSalle St, Chicago, IL – 10:45am – meet in front of the building on LaSalle St. – bring your friends so they can pack the meeting room for the – 11:30am JCAR meeting, Room 600 C. More information is available at https://www.facebook.com/FrackFreeIllinois or by contacting drlora2@yahoo.com.

2) Sign and pass this petition: http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/jcar-members-please-prohibit?source=c.em.cp&r_by=522148

3) Call the 12 JCAR members and tell them:
“I am a resident of Illinois and I am deeply concerned about fracking. Prohibit the rules and bring this process out under the watchful eyes of the public. Thousands of IL residents have already shown you that they care deeply about the risks of fracking, including dangerous earthquakes in the active earthquake zones of the New Madrid and Wabash Valley in Southern Illinois. The fracking industry causes earthquakes, and this is an unacceptable risk! We say “no” to gutting the rules in closed door sessions. We care about our air, water, food and the future of our children on this planet. You have a duty to protect our climate from the methane that will inevitably leak from every well, pipe and tank, and to protect Illinois from earthquakes, radioactive waste, air and water contamination, and chemical secrets. Vote for the health, welfare and safety of the people of Illinois over the profits of the industry. Please prohibit the rules for fracking and send them back to the IDNR for improvements.”

You do not need to be their constituents to contact them. Their contact information is available in this pdf: http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/member.pdf

Organic and Naturally Grown Farms Near Chicago

Organic farms near chicagoEvery year our family makes our annual apple picking trip – typically to southwest Michigan. Since apples are one of those crops that can be rather pesticide heavy, I have compiled a list of farms within driving distance of Chicago that are either Organic or Naturally Grown. So far, I have limited our search to Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan (this can be expanded upon later). Most on the list are u-pick, although not all of them are. I have listed the types of crops grown at the bottom of each entry.

Off Grid Home Design 1

We have been thinking of the design for our next house and how we would like to be able to have things run there as self-sufficiently and sustainably as possible.  This family has taken off-grid living to another level.  Their home is absolutely beautiful!  While I am not generally a fan of modern architecture, I love the way that they married the modern elements of the house with the barnwood and the traditional stone structure.  This is modernism done well.  Beautiful, just beautiful.  As an architect in my “other” life, I give them many compliments.  They also inspire me to get my act together so we can create our own country oasis sooner, rather than later.
